For the last couple of years, I have been having a re-occurring dream involving various types of labyrinths.
In the dream, I am caught inside of an impossible situation, lost in some exotic world where I wander endlessly, often in a darkened world or underground.
The labyrinth is represented by a medieval town center with narrow alleyways zigzagging everywhere, a modern city with circular walkways and twisted transportation tubes, or just last night a fence in the backyard that suddenly reformed itself into dead-ends and endless corridors.
Often it becomes am awkward situation. I realize I forgot to pack my luggage and I am either naked or in my underwear, or have a flight to catch and at the last moment the gates get jammed shut, or I have to make a last-minute call and either forget the number I have to call or even worse I cannot figure out any more how the mobile phone works.
The endless struggle to find my way to the hidden goal and the endless number of various obstacles I have to overcome is bad enough.
But the real killer is that just before I achieve the goal, something unexpected happens whereby the end is in reach but something drastic occurs and I am left just short and empty-handed.
That is almost always the moment that I wake up.
